Salvation Season 2 Finale

Salvation season 2 finale ‘Get Ready’  aired on Monday September 17th at 9/8c on CBS.  The season wrapped with another high octane episode and a shocking final twist.  Reaction from fans to the finale has been overwhelmingly positive.   Here’s a brief recap of ‘Get Ready’ :

Darius (Santiago Cabrera), tortured, beaten and drugged at the hands of Uncle Nicholas (John Noble) and cult leader Bass Shepherd (Luke Arnold), is rescued by Harris (Ian Anthony Dale), Grace (Jennifer Finnigan) and Alonso (Ashley Thomas).  Jillian (Jacqueline Byers) who had realized she had been used by the cult, tries to protect Darius from the torture but later it becomes clear that he has given out the launch codes for Salvation Ark to Uncle Nicholas and Bass.  Darius is in a bad state after what he has suffered and has a seizure.  In the first of several shocking moments in the episode, he wakes up in hospital with Grace by his bedside, only to be told the Salvation ark has already gone and he has been in a coma for 44 days – and the asteroid Samson is due to impact in just 3 days.

While Darius has been in a coma, Grace has married Harris to secure a place in an underground bunker for her pregnant daughter Zoe.  Harris is preparing to unleash the nuclear warheads the world has decided are the only remaining solution to Samson even though doing so will decimate humanity because Samson will break into pieces. Grace will not commit to going to the bunker with Harris while there is still hope and to Harris’ dismay says she is going to help Darius.  Darius has little time left to come up with a plan but he has a recurring metaphor in his subconscious of a hummingbird which he is convinced holds a clue if he can only find the relevance.

Darius and Grace go to a now abandoned pet shop (society is preparing for Samson’s impact) where he collects humming bird feeders.  He puts them up and attracts a humming bird. Darius realizes then the significance of the metaphor and his dreams –  hummingbirds appear to defy the laws of physics.  They seem to hover in place but are actually moving and then returning to the same place very quickly, imperceptible to the human eye. And he deduces that Samson did the same thing during the rail gun pellets apparent miss.  Grace tells Darius she married Harris for Zoe’s sake, so her daughter could have a safe place and some hope.  He asks Grace if she is planning to go with Harris and Zoe to the bunker, she says unless he can give her a reason not to. He kisses her, smiles and tells her he’s working on it.  Zoe later tells Grace that she doesn’t need her and she should be with Darius who does need her, releasing Grace from her commitment to go to the bunker.

Meanwhile under Darius’s instructions, Alycia (Melia Kreiling) and Liam (Charlie Rowe) reach out to RESYST figurehead Nero to hack into and shut down the launch of the nukes, it is revealed that Harris’ son Dylan (André Dae Kim) is still alive and is currently Nero. Harris gives up his place in the bunker to Dylan so that he can be with Zoe and their baby.

Grace and Harris go to see Jillian who is still in custody.  Grace tells Jillian that Darius forgives her for the rail gun being destroyed and in fact her actions made no difference anyway.  Harris decides to let Jillian go and she goes to Tanz where she is reunited with Liam.

After confirming with Dr Carson (Willie Garson) at an Antarctica research outpost that pulses of neutrinos (invisible high energy sub atomic particles given off by massive expenditures of energy) were detected at the time the slugs should have hit the asteroid, Darius storms the Pentagon along with Grace, Liam and Jillian to demand that Harris hold off on launching the nuclear warheads. Alycia decides to remain at Tanz.   Harris is unconvinced by Darius.  With the clock ticking down, he demands that Darius explain his idea. Darius confirms that the rail gun pellets didn’t miss Samson, the math was right, but that the asteroid briefly jumped out of the way.  Because the asteroid…isn’t an asteroid.

Darius, Grace, Harris, Liam and Jillian then head outside to witness was expected to be Samson’s impact, only to watch the unknown object slow down and then stop,  hovering in the sky above them.

“Whatever it is… it’s here,” Darius observes, before credits start to roll.

There is no news yet on renewal but that incredible finale cliffhanger has set things up for a thrilling and suspenseful Season 3.
