Coffee with Santiago
Linh and Marty from WJZ13 CBS Baltimore posted an interview, Coffee with: Santiago Cabrera…
Exclusive interview with Santiago in Entertainment Tonight. Here’s an excerpt, read the full interview here.
‘Cabrera stars as Darius Tanz, a tech billionaire who teams up with an MIT grad student, Liam Cole (Charlie Rowe), to save the planet from an enormous asteroid that’s about to hit earth in six months.
ET caught up with the actor ahead of the show’s premiere, where he discussed how Iron Man’s Tony Stark and other notable creative minds helped to shape his character.
“In many ways he covers the nature of a hero,” Cabrera said of Darius. “He’s very lonely with a great gift, but sacrifices a normal life for a greater cause. In the long run he’s definitely one of the heroes of the story.”
“There is definitely a modeling after Elon Musk,” he continued, further explaining that Darius is a maverick and someone who challenges the status quo. “I also had Tony Stark in mind and even went way back to Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci, for example, was someone, who at the time, was considered crazy for talking about helicopters and things that people thought was out of the question.”’

‘Darius Tanz is this really smart, wealthy, sexy guy. Did you base him on anybody, like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, or Bill Gates? There’s so many people to choose from.
There are. I definitely have a bit of all of those men that you mentioned, and I even did a lot of research on Einstein and Da Vinci, the great minds of our times in different periods of history, to try and find a sort of common thread and a common theme between them. I think Elon Musk is the easiest comparison in the sense of space exploration being something that he’s looking into, and Darius, in that first episode, he seemed talky about inhabiting Mars. Then, you take those elements, and you make them your own, and make them your own person.
Do you have a backstory for Darius?
I definitely have a creative backstory for myself, and I went to show runners Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, so that we’re all on the same page with the backstory. They already had ideas because they’ve been with it longer than me, and then through my own ideas as well, you’re creating structure.
I think he’s a very lonely guy in the nature of heroes. Darius has a gift. He has a great mind. He’s a genius in his own right, and he sacrifices a normal life for a cause, and to put that gift into play, Darius’ life is his work and it’s his company. So, that’s the love of his life, really. So, he’s a very lonely man, a very driven person, and people that get to that place, the great CEO’s of companies, or the people that are the very influential people today, they make a lot of enemies on the way, as well, because it’s not an easy task to get there. So, I think he’s a conflicted character. He goes against the status quo. He challenges people constantly, and I find that fun.’
Don’t forget to tune in to the Salvation premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS !
