Santiago Cabrera Big Little Lies Finale

The final episode of Big Little Lies ‘You Get What You Need’ aired on HBO on Sunday 2nd April.   It was a thrilling conclusion to what has been a wonderful series, worthy of several Emmy awards.   It opens with a shocking scene between Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and Perry  (Alexander Skarsgard) and the pace never lets up afterward.

Big Little Lies Episode 7 The Finale synopsis

Joseph (Santiago) and Madeleine (Reese Witherspoon) meet again when Madeleine realises Tori (Sarah Sokolovic) was slowly driving past Madeline’s home.  When she confronts Joseph about it at the theater, he tells Madeleine  that Tori doesn’t know for sure and then calls her out on her pretense of not wanting him at all and her hypocrisy.  Any flame he carried for her has turned into fury.  He calls her a ‘self-entitled rich bitch’ and orders her out of his office, but not before telling her he will see her at the fundraising gala. It’s unsettling to say the least and Madeline leaves, shaken, and the audience are left wondering if Joseph will enact revenge at the fundraiser…

In fact with emotions running high, the school’s Audrey Hepburn/Elvis themed gala fundraiser proves to be a boiling pot of revelations that leaves no one unscathed.  Madeline has grappled with keeping her past affair with Joseph a secret from Ed (Adam Scott). But Ed isn’t a fool. When they arrive at trivia night (what a bonus to see Santiago/Joseph dressed as Elvis!)  the tension between Tori, Joseph, and Madeline is palpable. All three of them continue to look at one another throughout the evening, which Ed witnesses first hand. There is never a major scene between Madeline and Ed but it’s clear he knows. This makes his rendition of Elvis’s ‘The Wonder of You’ even more wrenching. The song is clearly directed at Madeline and she gets upset, Reese perfectly capturing the poignant heartbreak, turmoil and guilt of the moment. When Joseph tells Tori he’s going to the rest room, we think he might be going to confront Madeline again in yet another twist. How the denouement is played out is very well done.

The ocean has been a metaphor throughout the series; on the surface it’s beautiful, but it also holds hidden depths and chaos. It’s fitting that director Jean-Marc Vallée and writer David E. Kelley choose to end the show here, by the ocean, with Bonnie, Renata, Jane, Madeline and Celeste with their children on the beach. There’s no dialogue but it’s all the more powerful without it.

At the fundraiser. Joseph (Santiago) as Elvis

Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive and social media has been buzzing with praise for the show.  It’s been great seeing Santiago playing Joseph; his scenes with Reese were fantastic. Look for Ensemble Cast awards at the Emmys next year.
